The Midweek Motivation offers a chance to further reflect on the Sunday sermon. This email based devotional is designed to help us continue to wrestle with God’s Word during the week. If you are not receiving this message you can sign up here.
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 1 Peter 2:9
The historical shorthand for this verse of Scripture is “the priesthood of all believers.” In this text, the apostle Peter rightly emphasizes the role that every believer in Christ Jesus plays in this world. We are all priests for the Living God. But what does this mean?
This Sunday, we explained this with the analogy of a bridge. Essentially, a priest is a bridge. A priest has one foot firmly rooted in the realm of heaven. They have a special connection and relationship with the Living God. A priest also has one foot planted on earth. They understand the world and the struggles of the people around them.
The priest is asked to bridge heaven and earth.
When we trust our lives to the Lordship of Jesus Christ, we are anointed with the Presence of God in the Holy Spirit. We thus bear the Holy Spirit into the world. This gives us the opportunity to be a bridge in the midst of our everyday lives. Everywhere we go, we bear the Presence of God with the opportunity to speak and act in grace, mercy, and love. Everywhere we go, we have the ability to lift before our heavenly Father in prayer the things of this world.
In many ways, this can seem daunting. Don’t let it be. Instead, begin to practice your priesthood in small ways. Pause and pray about the things that are going on around you. Pay attention to the needs around you. If you get a sense that God might be nudging you into an action of grace and mercy, trust God as you step forward. Know that when you step forward, you do not step alone. Keep your eyes open to see how God moves in and through your actions.
Likely, God will invite you into acts of mission in small ways that are balanced with your life and spheres of influence. As you learn to trust God and to bridge his love, God will be able to shape you and the world around you with his grace and peace.
Lord Jesus, help us this day to step forward in mission. Give us eyes to see the needs of the world around us. Give us ears to hear your direction and to know your lead. Give us courage to step forward and bridge your love into the world around us. Thank you for inviting us into your great love and passion for the world. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
